Apple-Samsung silicon union still strong, chip expert says

Call it a habit that Samsung and Apple just can’t break.

Their critical partnership in silicon is still strong, according to the CEO of chip industry tracker VLSI Research, Dan Hutcheson, who spoke with CNET in a phone interview, after returning from a trip to South Korea, the land of Samsung.

Samsung still smartphone king despite market share dip

Samsung kept its firm lead over Apple in the smartphone arena last quarter, though both companies saw their shares drop.

For the second quarter, Samsung’s slice of the global smartphone market inched down to 30.4 percent from 32.2 percent a year ago, IDC said in a report released Thursday. However, shipments jumped to 72.4 million from 50.3 million over (more…)

Android still leads in U.S., but iOS grows stronger

Android remains the top dog for U.S. smartphone sales, though Apple ‘s iOS is creeping up.

Google’s mobile OS took home 52 percent of all U.S. smartphone sales from March through April, showing little gain from the same period last year, Kantar said on Monday.

At the same time, iOS grabbed 41.9 percent of smartphone sales in the U.S., an increase of 3.5 percent from a year ago. And Apple (more…)

Apple doesn’t seem ready to leap into the mobile payments arena, at least according to comments made Tuesday by CEO Tim Cook.

At Tuesday’s conference call announcing fiscal second-quarter earnings, Cook responded to a question about mobile payments.

“I think it’s in its infancy,” the Apple CEO said. “I think it’s just getting started. Just out of the starting block.”

After reviewing a handful of the latest and greatest smartwatches, I discovered something shocking. Out of my old electronics drawer I pulled out my iPod Nano, the 2011 clip-on MP3 player that’s no longer even sold by Apple . It’s attached to a Hex Nano metal watchband. I wore this for over a year, and was so in love with the idea of an Apple smartwatch (more…)

Samsung still rules U.S. mobile market

Samsung continues to reign over the rest of the mobile-phone industry in the U.S., according to the latest stats from ComScore.

Looking at the three months ending with November, Samsung won 26.9 percent of all mobile subscribers in the U.S., a 1.2 point gain from the prior three-month period. Apple took home second place with 18.5 percent of the market, a gain (more…)

Android, Apple capture still more U.S. smartphone users

Android and Apple continue to bite bigger hunks out of the U.S. smartphone market.

As of the three months ended July, Google’s mobile OS held a 52.2 percent share of the market, a gain of 1.4 points from the prior three months, ComScore said today. In second place, Apple ‘s iOS grabbed 33.4 percent of the market, up 2 points from the prior period.

Apple gains users, but Samsung still the mobile-phone leader

Apple scored the greatest gain in market share among cell phone makers last quarter but was stuck in third place behind Samsung and LG.

Looking at the three months ending with June, ComScore pegged Apple with a 15.4 percent share of the U.S. mobile-phone market, up from 14 percent the prior three months. Such growth surpassed that of the other top three players, each of which saw a dip in market (more…)
