Nielsen: 1 in 2 own a smartphone, average 41 apps

If those numbers sound staggering to you, consider where the mobile phone customer landscape was just one year ago. Nielsen reports that just 40 percent of mobile subscribers had smartphones and that apps per device were at 32.

Android reclaims 61 percent of all U.S. smartphone sales

Android has staged a healthy lead over Apple ‘s iOS as the smartphone wars continue.

Looking at the first quarter of the year, NPD Group pegged Android’s U.S. market share at 61 percent, a jump over the 49 percent recorded in last year’s fourth quarter.

On the flip side, iOS lost ground with a 29 percent market share, down from 41 percent during 2011′s final quarter.

Apple and Samsung essentially own the entire mobile phone market now, leaving nothing but scraps left over for the rest of the pack.

Tracking the industry’s various players, Dediu found that Apple now holds 73 percent of all operating profits and Samsung 26 percent, leaving HTC with just 1 percent.

Apple tops Japanese smartphone market for first time

As news of Apple ‘s monster holiday season quarter continues to filter in though various lenses, one is particularly striking. Specifically, Apple now sits atop the Japanese cell phone market, shipping more iPhone units than its competitors in Japan.

4G phones nab one-third of the smartphone market

4G smartphones grabbed 35 percent of the market last quarter, up from just 6 percent in the final quarter of 2010, market researcher NPD said yesterday.

Among the various 4G flavors, HSPA+ was the most prevalent, representing 22 percent of all smartphone sales. Deployed by AT&T and T-Mobile, HSPA+ got a huge boost in the fourth quarter from the iPhone 4S, which uses the high-speed technology on AT&T’s network.
