Apple-Samsung silicon union still strong, chip expert says

Samsung makes the highly-praised 64-bit Apple A7 processor.

Call it a habit that Samsung and Apple just can’t break.

Their critical partnership in silicon is still strong, according to the CEO of chip industry tracker VLSI Research, Dan Hutcheson, who spoke with CNET in a phone interview, after returning from a trip to South Korea, the land of Samsung.

Apple again trounces Samsung in US smartphone wars

Apple and Samsung both saw the same gains in their US smartphone shares last quarter, but the iPhone was by far the top device, according to research firm ComScore.

Looking at the US smartphone market for the last three months of 2013, ComScore pegged Apple with a 41.8 percent share, up 1.2 percentage points from the prior three months. Samsung also grabbed a 1.2 point gain, giving it a (more…)

Apples future processors said to be made by Samsung, TSMC

Apple A7 processor: Future iPhones will use chips — such as the rumored A8 and A9 — from both Samsung and TSMC reportedly.

Both Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will make future Apple processors, according to a report from Taipei-based Digitimes.

iPhone 5S helps Apple top Samsung in September

Apple 's iPhone 5S was top dog in the US last month.

The iPhone 5S was available for only 10 days in September, yet it still outscored Samsung’s Galaxy S4 in US sales, says a new report.

Overall, Apple sold 4.8 million iPhones last month, according to Counterpoint Research data obtained by the Guardian. That number gave it a 38 percent share of the US smartphone market (more…)

Apple may have to rely on arch-rival Samsung for a hefty percentage of processors to power the next iPhone .

Samsung has been Apple ‘s go-to manufacturer for the past several chip generations, most recently producing the A5, the A6, and this year’s A7. Apple getting its A7 chip from Samsung

Apple is getting its A7 processor from Samsung, as expected.

By “decapping” the A7, Chipworks has verified that the A7 is manufactured by Samsung.

iPhone holds value better than do Samsung phones -- analyst

Android may be outpacing Apple at new sales, but the iPhone seems to be the better bet in terms of resale value. At least, that’s according to new data from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

Surveying the recent resale market, Munster found that Apple hung onto its value in the U.S. better than did certain Samsung devices.

Samsung Galaxy S3 tops iPhone in smartphone satisfaction poll

A couple of Samsung phones shot past those of arch-rival Apple in a new survey measuring satisfaction among smartphone users.

The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 both took home grades of 84 out of 100 in a study released Wednesday by the American Customer Satisfaction Index. The Galaxy S4 was not included as the survey was conducted just prior to its debut.

Samsung still smartphone king despite market share dip

Samsung kept its firm lead over Apple in the smartphone arena last quarter, though both companies saw their shares drop.
