AT&T has just announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011. AT&T reports that it sold a record 9.4 million smartphones in the last quarter, of which not surprisingly 7.6 million were
.
AT&T delivered its best-ever smartphone sales quarter — up nearly 60 percent from the year-ago period. (
Smartphones are devices with voice and data capabilities and an advanced operating system to better manage data and Internet access.)
In the fourth quarter, the company set a new record with 9.4 million smartphones sold, nearly double the number sold in the third quarter and 50 percent more than the previous quarterly record. Fourth-quarter smartphone sales represented more than 80 percent of postpaid device sales. Both iPhone and Android device sales set records. During the quarter, more than 7.6 million iPhones were activated, the majority of which were iPhone 4S, which went on sale Oct. 14, and more than twice as many Android smartphones were sold versus the fourth quarter a year ago. iPhone sales were helped by a superior customer experience, with AT&T delivering download speeds up to three-times faster than on other U.S. carriers’ networks.
Earlier in the week, Apple blew away analyst forecasts by reporting that they sold a
in the last quarter. However, it wasn’t clear if this was due to
, which Apple is offering for free with a 2-year contract or if it was only due to surge in demand for their new iPhone . AT&T has revealed that majority of the iPhones activated were iPhone 4S. Though activations include even old iPhones that may have been activated on new contracts, it seems to indicate that majority of the iPhones sold by Apple in the last quarter were iPhone 4S, which makes it even more impressive.

AT&T appears to be all set to break their previous quarterly records on smartphone sales, largely thanks to the popularity of the
.
AT&T announced in an online press release that it sold 6 million smartphones in the just the first two months of the fourth quarter. With some time left, it looks like it’s ready to beat its previous record of 6.1 million smartphones.
While December is traditionally a high-sales month because of the holidays, the iPhone 4S’s
has a lot to do with that success, especially considering AT&T’s
.
AT&T’s strong smartphone sales in part reflect a higher number of handset upgrades from customers who were waiting for the launch of a new iPhone . AT&T previously announced that it activated more than 1 million iPhone 4S’ in the first five days the device was available. AT&T said iPhone 4S sales remain strong. Only on AT&T’s network can iPhone 4S users download three times faster and talk and surf at the same time.
Their announcement also covers a bit of the new 4G LTE roll-out.
Stephens also said today that AT&T will turn up additional 4G LTE markets, including New York City, this month, and expects to cover 70 million people with its LTE network by year-end 2011, consistent with its previously announced plans.
AT&T also posted a regulatory filing highlighting that they’ll be due for a hit financially.
Also consistent with AT&T’s earlier guidance, these record smartphone sales are expected to have a near-term negative impact on margins and therefore earnings. However, AT&T expects that these postpaid customers over time will benefit the Company as, historically, postpaid customers produce stable revenue, reflecting their contract term, and higher average revenue per subscriber, including stronger data usage, than other customer categories.
While this may seem counter-intuitive, it’s pretty standard. AT&T will have to take over the subsidies for all of those record-breaking smartphone sales. In the long-term, however, they’ll be making up the revenue due to a larger customer-base locked into 2-year contracts.
. They’re the only carrier that offers the
– that, too, for free with a 2-year contract.
or perhaps launch their 4G LTE network in more markets.
,

AT&T is looking at some happy holidays thanks to a new record expected for smartphone sales.

The carrier anticipates breaking its previous quarterly record by ringing in sales of more than 6.1 million for the final quarter of 2011.

Speaking at the UBS 39th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference (PDF) in New York earlier today, AT&T Chief Financial Officer John Stephens said that the carrier has already sold around 6 million smartphones just in October and November.

And since December is typically a strong month, the company is looking to handily beat its previous record of 6.1 million phones sold.

The robust quarter was due in no small part to Apple ‘s latest iPhone . A large number of customers were waiting for the iPhone 4S to upgrade from their existing handsets. AT&T had previously said that it activated more than … [Read more]

AT&T and Sprint have both reported that they have seen record activations for Apple ‘s new iPhone 4S yesterday, it’s official launch day.
Last week, AT&T had announced that
. The high demand also seems to have caused
.
As of 4:30 pm ET today, AT&T had already activated a record number of iPhones on our network – and is on-track to double our previous record for activations on a single day. These record volumes may produce slower activations for some customers, though our systems continue to run at record levels.
This is impressive when you consider than iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to be available on Sprint and Verizon’s network.
Meanwhile, Sprint also announced that iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 recorded the best best ever day of sales for a device family in Sprint history. They
Sprint today reported its best ever day of sales in retail, web and telesales for a device family in Sprint history with the launch of iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. We reached this milestone at approximately noon CT/1pm ET. The response to this device by current and new customers has surpassed our expectations and validates our customers’ desire for a truly unlimited data pricing plan.
Sprint attributed iPhone 4S’ successful launch to the unlimited data plans.
Verizon – the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. and Apple ‘s third iPhone launch partner has been surprisingly quite.

The iPhone 5 will represent a major upgrade over its predecessor, helping “shatter” the sales record captured by the iPhone 4 at launch last year, says an analyst with Ticonderoga Securities.

Providing his take on the new iPhone ahead of today’s launch event, analyst Brian White expects the iPhone 5 to offer a “sleek, aluminum unibody enclosure” that’s more like the MacBook Air than the iPhone 4. The new enclosure will not only look better but be stronger and lighter, avoiding the cracks that sometimes appear in the glass back of the iPhone 4.

The new enclosure could even pave the way for Apple to bump up the screen by at least half an inch to 4 inches or more. Echoing the opinions of other analysts, White also expects the new iPhone to boast a dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera.

“Apple will clearly need to upgrade the processor speed to at least a Dual Core 1.2GHz to match the Samsung Galaxy S II, while upgr… [Read more]

Despite the surge in demand for Android, Apple ‘s iOS still holds the lead among mobile platforms, at least according to the latest data from Net Applications.

In a survey of the mobile landscape for September, iOS hit a new record with a 54.6 percent share of the market. That’s up from 53 percent the prior month and 42 percent a year ago.

Trailing behind Java ME, which is typically used in feature phones, was Android with a 16.26 percent share. Though in third place, Google’s mobile OS has seen a rise from a year ago when it was in fourth place with only 8.3 percent of the market as tracked by Net Applications.

Continuing its downward spiral, Nokia’s Symbian grabbed only 6.1 percent in September, down from a year ago when it still held a 10.5 percent share. Coming up behind were RIM’s BlackBerry with 3.2 percent and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile/Windows Phone with a collective half a percentage point.

regularly tracks your iOS device and records the co-ordinates along with timestamp in a hidden file.
Allan and Pete Warden will speak about this topic at O’Reilly Where 2.0 Conference that started yesterday at Santa Clara, CA.
All iPhones appear to log your location to a file called “consolidated.db.” This contains latitude-longitude coordinates along with a timestamp. The coordinates aren’t always exact, but they are pretty detailed. There can be tens of thousands of data points in this file, and it appears the collection started with iOS 4, so there’s typically around a year’s worth of information at this point. Our best guess is that the location is determined by cell-tower triangulation, and the timing of the recording is erratic, with a widely varying frequency of updates that may be triggered by traveling between cells or activity on the phone itself.
Allan has raised privacy concerns as the hidden file is also backed up to your computer when you sync it, in unencrypted and unprotected form.
“Apple has made it possible for almost anybody – a jealous spouse, a private detective – with access to your phone or computer to get detailed information about where you’ve been.”
) that can be used to look at the contents of the hidden file. They have also reached out to Apple for comment but haven’t received a response yet.
(click on your device within iTunes and then check “Encrypt iPhone Backup” under the “Options” area).
Are you worried that Apple is recording your location data?

Apple has posted record revenue of $26.74 billion and record net quarterly profit of $6 billion, or $6.43 per diluted share for its fiscal 2011 first quarter ended December 25, 2010.
Apple sold an amazing 16.24 million
in the quarter, up 86 percent over the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold 7.33 million
during the quarter.
Apple sold 4.13 million Macs during the quarter, up 23 percent unit over the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold 19.45 million
Wall Street seems to have liked the results, especially when you consider that the stock was down today after yesterday’s media advisory regarding
