Couple of days back, we reported that
that starts on June 6th.
or iPhone 4S as the possible reason for the invitation.
But we had mentioned that the invitations could very well be for the launch of iOS 5, which is expected to be a major upgrade.
MG Siegler of TechCrunch seems to agree, he reports that according to their sources, Apple won’t be making any hardware announcements at next months’ WWDC 2011:
Apple is Apple — they may always have a “one more thing” up their sleeve. And at least one of our sources still thinks that Apple will surprise with some new iPhone hardware. But right now, we’re not buying it. All other (solid) indications are that there will still be no hardware announcements at WWDC. None. And the extension of invitations to journalists in no way indicates anything different.
Instead, we’re hearing that Apple is pushing for journalists to come to WWDC because the software announcements will be huge (and they likely know that journalists hearing there will be no iPhone 5 announcement may choose to stay home instead this year). And the changes will be vital for all developers in the Apple ecosystem(s) to know about.
The other big news for iOS5 — and yes, I’ve completely buried the lede here, thanks for reading! — two things: completely revamped notifications and widgets.
has been maligned for being intrusive and modal and we’ve been hoping that Apple will revamp the Push Notification system in iOS 5. We’ve already seen
.
Widgets have also been one of the most requested features in iOS, which could provide quick access to information such as weather without the need to launch apps.
If Apple surprises us with iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S as the “one more thing” then it would be a huge bonus.
We can’t wait to find out the new features and changes in iOS 5? What’s on your wish list for iOS 5? Let us know in the comments below.

has been maligned for being intrusive and modal. iOS competitors on the other hand have been doing a good job on this front of late. HP’s webOS for example has a banner notification system that has been widely acclaimed.
.
,
then you probably don’t have to wait for Apple to fix it as developer, Peter Hajas has released a
called MobileNotifier, which is pretty cool.
Mobile Notifier is inspired by Android’s notification system so unlike iOS’s push notification system, MobileNotifier prevents notifications from interrupting you and allows you to access your notifications from a drop-down drawer. You can also access the notifications from your iOS device’s lock screen.
switcher for the Alert Dashboard to show the pending alerts/notifications.
Peter has recently released the third beta version of MobileNotifier, which you can install from the
homescreen.
.

http://phajas.xen.prgmr.com/repo

After it is successfully added, tap on the
.
You will be prompted to Restart SpringBoard, tap on the button to proceed.
That’s it, you should now be able to use the revamped notification system courtesy MobileNotifier.
As always, please don’t forget to tell us if you like it.
, thanks Jeff for the tip]

Hotmail is making it easier for you to stay up-to-date and be productive on your phone. Starting today, you can get your email, calendar, and contacts pushed automatically to your phone using Exchange ActiveSync (EAS). EAS keeps everything in sync between your phone and Hotmail, so whatever you do on your phone, like delete an email, add an appointment, or update one of your contacts with a new number, will also be reflected on the web, and vice-versa. If you use an email client on your PC that already syncs with Hotmail, like Outlook with the Outlook Connector or Windows Live Mail, what you do on your phone will show up there as well, delivering a seamless experience for managing your stuff between your PC email client, your browser, and your phone.
You can follow these steps to setup Hotmail using Exchange ActiveSync on your iPhone ,
Launch the Settings App. Under Settings, tap on “Mail, Contacts, Calendar”.
Then tap on “Add Account”.
Tap on “Microsoft Exchange” to configure Hotmail ActiveSync.
. Leave Domain blank. Enter your password. In the Description field, enter a name, e.g Hotmail.
Then tap on the Next button.
After the details entered above are successfully verified. You will get another screen where you need to enter m.hotmail.com for the Server name. Then tap on the Next button.
If the verification is successful, you will see this screen. Select the data (Mail, Contacts, Calendar) to sync and then tap on Save.
That’s it, you’re all set for push email, calendar and contacts for your Hotmail account.
As always, let us know how it goes.

Ever missed an appointment or important email because you were away from your desk? Now Google Mobile App can help with push notifications from your Google account to your iPhone — an icon badge shows you’ve got new mail in Gmail, and Google Calendar event reminders appear right on your home screen.
You can enable or disable notifications for Gmail and/or Google Calendar for a Google account via the Settings tab (Google Account –> Account –> Notifications). You’re can also select the times during, which you want to receive notifications.
Google has also improved the suggest feature, making it a lot faster to search for flight info, weather, stock quotes or currency conversion (you see the answers even before your hit ‘Search’).
So far I’ve hardly used Google Mobile App on my iPhone but plan to use the notification feature for Google Calendar and the revised suggest feature while searching for information in the verticals it currently supports.
Do you use Google Mobile App for iPhone ? Will you use it more with the features introduced in the new version? Let us know in the comments.

Push Doctor has been developed by anethema. It gives you genuine activation certificatesunlike other workarounds, and they are always unique.
The fix is available on the Cydia Store for free. Here are the installation instructions:
Please remember hacking your iPhone could void its warranty. So please proceed with caution and at your own risk and don’t forget to take a
for more details).
Simply add the NERV repository: http://cmdshft.ipwn.me/apt/ to your Cydia sources.
Search for the package called “Push Doctor”.
Install it and push notification should start working on your hactivated iPhone .
This is NOT an application you run from SpringBoard or command line. It does all the work immediately while Cydia runs. If you install this to fix push, and you decide to uninstall the package it will not remove the push fix. Reinstalling will delete your “old” certs and install new ones. You will not notice any difference, however.
If the fix doesn’t work then it could be because the server is out of unique certs due to high demand. The developer has advised users to try to reinstall the package later or the next day to fix the issue.
If you still plan to try it out then let us know how it goes. If you need support, join #pushfix on chat.osx86.hu.

Speaking about this for the Skype blog, David Ponsford, the leader of Skype's iPhone team revealed that the company is holding back their '
' update for a little more while in order to improve the audio quality of the service. The new version of the application, which Ponsford says will be released ”
Interestingly, Ponsford did not speak anything about bringing
to the iPhone . You might recall that this has been one of the
from the users. In fact, the company had last month indicated that work was in progress on this front and promised to introduce the feature to the users when the experience was ”
“. With no mention about this in Ponsford's recent interview, we expect some more time before push notification is brought to the iPhone app.
Meanwhile, Skype has not indicated a time frame for the release of its 3G version though we believe that should be within the next couple of weeks. We will let you know as and when that happens.

The new version fixes a few bugs besides introducing a couple of significant additions. iPhone users on Skype version 1.3 can IM in the landscape mode. Also, the new version comes with a call quality indicator helping users decide the right time to call. But besides these additions, the update has largely been a disappointment without the inclusion of features such as
, bluetooth support, Wi-Fi support, conference calling or VoIP over 3G.
As we had mentioned in our article yesterday, the non-availability of VoIP over 3G is completely understandable since it is
. Having said that, with over five months having passed since the last update, the inclusion of push notification was largely anticipated and the non availability of the same is sure to irk a lot of long-time users.
According to Peter Parkes from the Skype team, the company is still working on enabling push notifications. He writes
“we’re working on this(Push notification); we’ll release a version with Push notifications when the experience has been perfected.”
We hope another quick update is soon made to bring push notification. Meanwhile, readers looking to download the app may do so by
(iTunes Link). What do you think of the new updates? Please tell us in the comments.

Users will now be able to receive a popup notification whenever somebody writes on your wall or comments on your status messages. As MG Seigler from
notes, this could let you to interact more passively with your Facebook data.
One of the other significant introductions in the new version of the Facebook app is the ability to sync your Facebook friends with your iPhone address book. This new syncing feature allows you to replace your address book contact pictures with those from Facebook.
These are no wonder very exciting updates to the existing platform. But it is interesting that it has taken quite a while for the updates to be implemented. Our readers might recall that Joe Hewitt had hinted at an
back in October of last year. It is not clear if the delay had something to do with
.
. As always, do let us know what you feel about the new features in the comments section below.

He has also revealed plans to release Facebook 3.1. One of the most significant updates in this release shall be the availability of push notifications.
have been one of the most sought after features on the Facebook iPhone app. At present, iPhone users looking to incorporate push notifications on their Facebook app have to make use of other third party apps like Boxcar.
Push notifications should work great for a majority of the average users. However, as MG Seigler from TechCrunch notes, the iPhone is not currently equipped to handle multiple push notifications efficiently. He writes
The Push Notification management system beyond a certain threshold is basically useless. That is to say, when you’re getting a large number of Push Notifications on your iPhone , it’s almost laughable how bad the built-in system is for trying to figure out what you just got notified about beyond the most recent message
“.
This could create problems for the power users who could have a tough time managing these notifications.Apparently, quite a few app developers including Loren Brichter, the developer of
have chosen not to provide a push notification system on their apps owing to iPhone 's problem in handling them.
While push notifications are indeed welcome on apps such as Facebook, it being enabled on all other apps that the iPhone user makes use of leads to an overkill. An ideal solution to this problem would be to disable the push notification setting by default so that the user can choose to enable notification from only those iPhone apps that they are concerned with.
Do you see push notification as a much needed update to the Facebook app or is it more of an unnecessary distration. Tell us your opinion in the commments.
