iPhone soaks up 75 percent of all mobile phone profits

Apple may not be the world’s leading mobile phone maker but its cut of both profits and sales puts it firmly at the top.

Though it holds only around 9 percent of the global mobile phone market, Apple raked in 75 percent of all profits across the industry last quarter, according to Asymco analyst Horace Dediu.

That left rival Samsung with 16 percent of the profit pie, RIM with 3.7 percent, HTC with 3 percent, (more…)

Siri brings nearly 25 percent of Wolfram Alpha traffic

According to a report by the New York Times, nearly 25 percent of the traffic handled by search engine Wolfram Alpha comes from Siri, Apple ‘s voice-controlled personal assistant software.

The disparity between Apple ‘s phone market share and profits has been known since quite some time. Asymco’s Horace Dediu illustrates this disparity via charts, taking into account the latest numbers from all phone manufacturers.
His findings?

Despite a drop in December, Apple ‘s iOS remained the top platform for mobile browsing, according to the latest stats from NetApplications.

Throughout December, iOS’s Safari carved out a 52 percent share of the mobile market, down from 54 percent in November and 61 percent in October, but still in the lead. Google’s Android browser ended December with a 16 percent share, a dip from the prior two months.

iPhone, iPad ring in 13 percent of all online purchases on Christmas

If you used an iPhone or iPad to buy something online on Christmas, you had plenty of company.

Among all online purchases made on Christmas Day, 7 percent were done through an iPad and 6.4 percent through an iPhone , giving iOS devices 13.4 percent of all online purchases that day.

Analyst reports 67 percent of Asian iPhone market untapped by Apple

According to a new analysis from Morgan Stanley’s Katy Huberty, Apple has yet to explore nearly 67 percent of the potential iPhone market in Asia.

The analysis, presented in a note to investors, suggests that only 22 percent of Asian carriers are selling Apple ‘s iPhone . Asian carriers represent nearly 10 percent of world’s highest smartphone penetration demographic (25- to 34-year-olds), about (more…)

Research firm Gartner has come out with its quarterly estimates of worldwide mobile phone sales for the third quarter of 2011.
Although global mobile device sales saw an increase of merely 5.6 percent over last year, the growth in smartphone sales was an impressive 42 percent YoY. 26 percent of the total phones sold last quarter were smartphones.
The key figure, however, was Android’s share of the total smartphone sales for the last quarter. (more…)

iOS 5 on almost 40 percent of iPhones

Just a few weeks after its debut, iOS 5 finds itself nestled on almost 40 percent of iPhones, according to stats from online ad network Chitika.

Analyzing iOS traffic on its own mobile network from October 22 to October 28, Chitika broke down the percentage of iOS 5 upgrades among Apple ‘s three major mobile devices: the iPhone , iPad, and iPod Touch.
