Apple Inc., preparing to announce a new set-top box that delivers TV to consumers, will include movies from Netflix Inc., according to three people with knowledge of the plans.
The streaming service would be available on the revamped version of Apple TV, due to be introduced tomorrow in San Francisco, said two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven’t been made public. Users would pay a subscription fee to Netflix for the service, the people said.
According to the report, Apple will introduce the new Apple TV for $99, which will be $130 less than the current model.
. It needs to be seen if it will also have access to the
.
There is no doubt that Netflix will be one of the killer features of the device but Netflix as a native app that can be downloaded from the App Store makes more sense as Netflix is currently available only in the US and Canada.

You need to be a Netflix member to use the app to watch movies and TV shows on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
Netflix for iPhone and iPod Touch works over Wi-Fi as well as over 3G, which was a nice surprise as we were expecting it to work only over Wi-Fi. Though it remains to be seen if it will work properly over AT&T’s congested 3G network.
You can also browse movies and manage your instant Queue from your iPhone .
You can resume watching a movie on your iPhone or iPod Touch that you had paused on your TV or computer.
We have heard some reports of users having problems using the iPhone app. Rebooting the iPhone or iPod Touch after installing the iPhone app seems to resolve the issue.
As always, don’t forget to drop us a line to give us your feedback about the iPhone app in the comments section below.

Though the Netflix app is now available on the App Store, the movie streaming service has left scores of iPhone users disappointed since the application does not stream movies over the iPhone . Steve Swasey, VP of Corporate Communications at Netflix had written last month:
“For those of you asking whether Netflix will be on the iPhone and iPod Touch: We wouldn't invite you to dinner without planning to serve dessert. In other words, we're working on it so stay tuned.”
Despite promises that a Netflix iPhone app shall be launching soon, there is still no news about a release date. Frustrated over the long wait, folks at
' had succeeded in hacking the Netflix's iPad application to make it work on the iPhone . This was achieved by copying the iPad Netflix app and iPad mediaplayer framework to the iPhone and then making a change on a few plists.
which makes the hack possible in the first place.
Strangely though, the hack has been remotely disabled within a few hours of it going live. It is not clear whether Netflix or Apple is responsible for disabling the functionality. The incident has nevertheless triggered speculations that the launch of an iPhone compatible Netflix application has been put on hold deliberately and is not ”
” as Netflix had earlier noted.
We are unsure if the move follows reservations from AT&T over allowing movie streaming apps on its congested 3G network. Knisitruck, the developer who has hacked the Netflix app, however disagrees. He points out that the Netflix app can drain as much as 25% of iPhone 's battery inside 15 minutes of movie streaming. He speculates that the high battery usage of Netflix's app on iPhone could be a reason why the application has not been made iPhone -compatible so far.
Nevertheless, we eagerly await the launch of an official Netflix iPhone app. We will update you on the same as and when that happens.

“Imagine that Netflix offers its subscribers the ability to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on their iPhone . The selection availability to instantly watch includes some new releases, lots of classics and TV episodes. There are no advertisements or trailers, and movies start in as little as 30 seconds. You can fast-forward, rewind, and pause or watch again. The movies & TV episodes you instantly watch are included in your Netflix membership for no additional fee.
Whenever you want to instantly watch content on your iPhone , your iPhone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network (such as one you might have at home or at work, or in public places like coffee shops, book stores, hotels, airports, etc.)
If this functionality were available, how likely would you or someone in your household be to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on your iPhone via a Wi-Fi network?”
. In his interview back in September of last year, Hastings had said:
“it’s something that’s likely to come over time. But nothing in the short term. (With) movie watching, we are not focused on mobile yet, but (instead) on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles. We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone .”
. While Apple 's tablet brings a lot of promise for a movie streaming service like Netflix, we are still skeptical about Netflix's iPhone app making it through the app approval process considering the potential threat that the app holds to sale on iTunes.
Do you want Netflix to release their movie streaming iPhone app? Do you think Apple will approve it?

Netflix has apparently been taking challenges one at a time, and at present their focus is purely on the gaming consoles and Internet TV. Netflix has an ongoing exclusive deal with XBox Live in the gaming console market. This apart, Netflix has also been pushing hard on the Internet TV market where there is some stiff competition. Hulu, Apple , Amazon and Blockbuster. Youtube has also recently announced their movie streaming service and Netflix is clearly focused on the movie streaming service on the internet.
So, why isn't Netflix looking at movie streaming on iPhones in the same light? Hastings says, ”
it’s something that’s likely to come over time. But nothing in the short term. (With) movie watching, we are not focused on mobile yet, but (instead) on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles. We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone .
Hastings' priorities are right to an extent. Currently, iPhones are not a favorable platform for services consuming a lot of internet bandwidth. With limitations placed by AT&T on the usage of its 3G services by iPhone apps like
,
etc, it is very unlikely that they will agree to let Netflix stream its movies over the internet to the iPhones. In that case, a Wi-Fi only movie streaming service does not make much business sense too. This sentiment was also echoed by John Silverman, the Skype CEO who, as we
yesterday, is lobbying to get carriers to allow Skype's mobile application to work over their 3G network.
, UStream TV and video broadcasting iPhone apps like
that are allowed to work over 3G. So, Netflix could bring their service to the iPhone (over 3G). I'm sure there are many users out there waiting for just this to happen.

Netflix might be planning to bring its “Watch Instantly” feature to new devices soon. Currently built in to several products, like Sony HDTVs, and very popular on the Xbox 360, the feature lets subscribers watch any of thousands of movies in the Netflix library on their TVs. There are no physical discs; the videos stream via Web connection.

And according to Afterdawn.com, which quotes unnamed executives familiar with the situation, the Nintendo Wii and Apple ‘s iPhone platform are next on the list. The Wii is a fairly obvious choice as Nintendo has been pushing streaming or downloadable content since the console launched a year and a half ago.

But the iPhone is something else. Apple –likely at the behest of AT&T–has kept much streaming video from the iPhone . Afterdawn points out that the streaming would likely be via Wi-Fi, only to keep bandwidth on the already overloaded network down.

What’s interesting is the lack of mention of the Apple TV. Sure, the iPhone and iPod Touch are much more popular devices, but the Apple TV–which already features streaming media via YouTube and the iTunes Movie Store–seems like a much more natural choice. People want to watch the movies on their TVs.

Apple wants you to rent or buy from iTunes and has never been happy with an “all you can eat” subscription service. But if Netflix can convince Jobs and company that “Watch Instantly” will be OK on the iPhone , then it can argue the same for the Apple TV.
