After rough IPO, concern for Apple supplier Japan Display

Japan Display, the world’s largest smartphone display supplier, had a rough IPO on Wednesday.

When Japan Display (JDI) listed its shares in a $3.1 billion initial public offering Wednesday, the price at opening dropped 15 percent below the IPO price, as reported by Nikkei.

DoCoMo ignites free iPhone 5S handset free-for-all in Japan

NTT DoCoMo’s entry into the iPhone fray in Japan is sparking fierce competition for customers, with all three carriers offering certain iPhone 5S models for free with a two-year contract.

DoCoMo, KDDI (au), and SoftBank will offer the 16GB versions of the iPhone 5S for effectively nothing with a two-year contract on certain plans (the so-called “0 Yen Plan”), all three carriers announced Friday. (more…)

Japan makers reel as Docomo begins big shift to iPhone

NTT DoCoMo has told Japan’s handset makers that iPhones will take about 40 percent of all new contracts, dealing a big blow to domestic phone suppliers, Nikkei reported Thursday.

The 40 percent figure is believed to be the quota that Apple and DoCoMo agreed on, the report said.

Japan makers said to ramp up iPhone 5S, 5C parts production

With new iPhones expected to be unveiled this month, production at Japan Display, TDK, and others is in high gear, according to the Nikkei business daily.

Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a merger of the small and medium-size display businesses of Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba, is in “full production” Nikkei said in a report Thursday.

iPhone 5S, 5C will reportedly land in Japan on Sept. 20

New iPhones will arrive in Japan on September 20 with a gold iPhone 5S option in tow, Japan’s Nikkei reported Wednesday.

SoftBank and KDDI will handle sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C starting on the 20th, according to Japan’s largest business daily. NTT Docomo is not expected to sell the new iPhones, Nikkei added.
