As promised, iPhone Dev team has released a new version of
- a popular jailbreaking tool, which brings native support for
, fixes the iBooks issue in iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 and lots more.
Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b will also allow users to downgrade using iOS 5.x. SHS blobs.
The holiday season is almost here (Happy Holidays!) so we realize everyone is busy (especially @pod2g!). And even though we always recommend that jailbreakers stay where they are until a new untethered JB comes out, that’s not always possible. So we’ve updated redsn0w for those who may have found themselves at iOS 5.0.1, and added some other useful features too:
native support for 5.0.1 (no need to point redsn0w at 5.0 IPSW or use command-line args). Support automatically extends to all of redsn0w’s various functions: “Jailbreak”, “Just boot”, “Fetch blobs”, “Stitch blobs”, “Recovery Fix”
iBooks fixed in 5.0 and 5.0.1. This is a targeted fix that doesn’t remove entire sandbox mechanism. 5.x users already using redsn0w “Just Boot” can just use the new version without redoing entire jailbreak again
ultrasn0w compatability update (i.e. same baseband requirements) for 5.0.1 will be available on Cydia Monday
support for newer 8GB iPhone 4 (which until now had problems with “Fetch blobs”). Thanks to @JKjeepnJeff for loaning us one of these newer i4 units for testing!
allows Windows users (not just OS X users) to use the “Custom” button to create IPSWs without baseband updates.
accommodates APTickets in 5.x (until next Apple countermove). APTickets are crypto-verified before submitting to Cydia, just like the main blobs. Cydia server support for sending back the APTickets is upcoming. For now, use stitched IPSWs for 5.x. Due to APTickets, stitched 5.x IPSWs now require user to start in “Pwned DFU” mode
Support added for stitching 4.x blobs to iPad2-GSM IPSWs. Similar to @notcom’s TinyCFW but doesn’t require lots of RAM or a TSS-assisted restore. Won’t work for iPad2 5.x blobs (or iPhone 4S at all) until a bootrom-level exploit is out
top line now shows whether (and where) a redsn0w update is available, or if the version being run is the latest. Uses DNS TXT record to alleviate any concerns about snooping
no 5.1 beta support at this time (major apps like Cydia are not yet compatible)
@pod2g has been doing a great job porting his 5.x untether…check
for updates!
. The iPad baseband will not work on 3GS iPhones built later than 2011 week 35. You have a week 35 or later device if your serial # starts with xx135.

for iPhone 4S users. Though the build number (build number of original iOS 5.0.1 was 9A405) suggested that Apple may have fixed some minor bugs, the details were not available.
has just reported that according to a new support document, Apple has fixed the annoying SIM card issues that has plagued iPhone 4S users.
on their shiny new iPhone .
With the update affecting a relatively small portion of users, Apple may have elected not to push it out to all users in the form of an iOS 5.0.2 software update, and instead rely on those users who are having problems following Apple ‘s advice and obtaining the new build through the restore process outlined as a solution for the issue.
In certain situations, iPhone 4S may have difficulty recognizing a micro-SIM card, resulting in the following behaviors:
– “Invalid SIM” or “No SIM Card installed” alert appears intermittently.
– Status bar displays “No Service” or “Searching” in a location with good network coverage.
1. Back up your user content and settings using iTunes or iCloud. See
for more information.
2. Restore your iPhone 4S using iTunes.
3. After the process is complete,
from your backup.
4. To confirm that you’ve successfully restored, verify that the version is now iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) in Settings > General > About.
reports that some users have reported that the tweaked version of iOS 5.0.1 fixes the SIM card issues, while others have reported that they’re still facing the problem.
If you’re facing the problem, let us know how it goes.

iPhone owners still using OS 3.1.3 can once again install new apps from the App Store.

Users running the older OS reported on Apple ‘s Support Communities over the past week that they were unable to download and install new apps directly onto their iPhone and iPod Touch devices, though they could update existing apps and sync new apps from iTunes. The glitch seemed specific to OS 3.1.3, though some iPhone 4S users with iOS 5 reported a similar problem.

As of yesterday afternoon, forum users started chiming in that the download bug had been squashed.

“Yes, it is true, after near one week after, the AppStore works again in our ‘old’ iOS3 devices,” posted one commenter.

“I really think that our insistence and devotion of some, benefited to our cause. Thank to Apple to finally decide to correct this bug,” wrote another.

A few people noted that some issues persist with OS 3.1.3, such as the Update button st… [Read more]

Apple ‘s iOS 5.0.1 update to address
, according to initial reports iOS 5.0.1 software is “nothing short of amazing”. Most developers who have used
beta reported much better battery life when on iOS 5.0.1.
and Twitter have some quotes from users on iOS 5.0.1, here are a few of them:
“Frankly the difference is nothing short of amazing. To go almost an entire day without a change in the meter reading seems unbelievable. Where before I could almost watch the battery drain, now it doesn’t move at all.”
: done [updated] it on a 3GS, a AT&T iPhone 4, and a 4s as shown. The 4s has gone from 15% loss per hour to 3-4%.
: My battery life has noticeably improved, I now only need to charge every other day as opposed to every day.
: I updated to IOS 5.0.1 beta 2 (9A404) and I definitely notice the battery life improvement.
Not all users reported improvement with the update, however:
: I have it and I don’t see any improvements to the battery life of my iPhone 4. I’m running iOS 5.0.1 Beta 2
: sadly no difference in battery life (around 4 and a half hours of usage, 6 standby). only change I’ve noted is the version number
and we expect Apple to release it to the users anytime soon.
If you’ve installed iOS 5 beta then let us know what has been your experience.

Apple ‘s iOS 5.0.1 update apparently fixes the battery drain problem, at least according to some early testers.

Revealing comments made by users who’ve installed the update, Wired found that most are enjoying a big boost in battery power. Followers of Wired on Twitter chimed in after the magazine posted a tweet asking who has updated to iOS 5.0.1 and if it improved their battery life.

In response, Wired reader Donald Kuntzman reportedly called the update “nothing short of amazing,” saying that his iPhone 4 can now get through almost the whole day without a change in the meter reading. Another person tweeted that his iPhone 4S went from losing 15 percent of its charge per hour to only 3 or 4 percent.

Another tweeter said that he now only needs to charge his phone every other day instead of every day, while a fourth person reported that he installed IOS 5.0.1 beta 2 and noticed an improvement in the battery life.

A few people said they saw no difference, while one person claimed the battery life got worse after iOS 5.0.1, but Wired seemed to discount that as a rare except… [Read more]

when the device was held in a particular way. The controversy grew to such a large scale, that
and brief the press, that the
but existed in a number of other smartphones as well.
mill churned out a number of rumors, most of which said that the then
, solving the “death grip” problem a number of customers faced. It seems that with the iPhone 4S’ improved antenna, which smartly switches between two antennas, Apple managed to resolve the death grip issue.
While the iPhone 4S has been available for much less than a day, a number of early buyers are reporting that the signal drop on the device when tightly held is considerably less than the corresponding drop for the
.
One user checked the signal drop for both the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 under “death grip” at the exact same place and noticed no signal drop on the iPhone 4S.
As you see in the image above, the iPhone 4 dropped one bar while there isn’t any signal loss on the iPhone 4S.
” much, many reviewers noted that the iPhone 4S does get better reception. Jim Dalrymple in his review for
The dual antennas are at work when you’re not on a call too. I have noticed that my signal is stronger in places where it was weak before.
We expect the issue to get clearer as more and more people get their hands on the iPhone 4S and test it in locations with weak signal strength.
Did you experience any such improvement on your iPhone 4S?

, which was one of the easiest solutions to jailbreak iPhone , iPad and iPod Touch. Comex had also released a patch called
to fix the vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files.
It was meant for users you didn’t want to upgrade to iOS 4.3.4, but also didn’t want to be exposed to the security vulnerability.
However, Apple quickly followed it up by releasing
for iPhone , iPad and iPod touch to fix the security vulnerability for certification validation. This meant that users who had jailbroken their iPhone , iPad or iPod touch using JailbreakMe 3.0, but didn’t want to upgrade to iOS 4.3.5 were exposed to the security vulnerability with certificate validation.
The goods news for these users is that a new jailbreak tweak called iSSLfix has just been released on Cydia that fixes the security vulnerability with certificate validation, thus bringing them on par with iOS 4.3.5.
Fix for iOS SSL vulnerability CVE-2011-0228 for iOS < 4.3.5 + stoen Comodo certificates blacklist for iOS < 4.3.2
homescreen.
.
Tap on iSSLfix from the search results and then tap on the ‘Install’ button.
Then Tap on the ‘Confirm’ button to install the patch on your iOS device.
After the patch is successfully installed, reboot your iOS device.
With this you have the best of both worlds, you have patched the vulnerability that is likely to be fixed by Apple in iOS 4.3.4 and you also get to keep your jailbreak.
