Apple Approves and Later Removes iDOS – DOS Emulator App From The App Store

This app is a DOSbox based open source DOS emulator, which offers support for keyboard, mouse and even multiple screen modes. iDos works equally well on the 4th iPod Touch 4G at 960*640 resolution! It had a brief stay at the App Store before being officially booted out. The reason for the removal is still not clear.

Einstein is an open-source project to run (via emulation) the Newton OS on modern hardware. It was written and released by Paul Guyot several years ago. It’s quite an amazing piece of work.
The project got a shot in the arm earlier this month when Matthias Melcher got it up and running on iOS and posted a video of himself running it on his iPhone . Being a Newton fan since my original MessagePad in 1993, it was quite a sight to see.

On sale at $6.99, the iPhone app was pretty comprehensive with features like ”

It does not come as a surprise however that the iPhone app has been removed from the App Store. Apple has all along stood its ground against emulator iPhone apps because of potential copyright violations and the subsequent legal trouble such emulators normally bring. (more…)

Commodore 64 iPhone emulator approved, yanked

The Commodore 64 emulator application for iPhone , previously rejected by Apple , was approved for availability in the App Store over the weekend, only to get pulled days later.

Apple blocked the sale of the iPhone app, dubbed C64, from the store on Tuesday without explaining why, according to developer Manomio. And while Apple was not immediately available for comment regarding the C64 app, which (more…)

Manomio had worked with both Kiloo and Commodore Gaming who own the license for Commodore 64 to ensure that their emulator for iPhone was fully licensed and legal.
But Apple rejected the initial version of their iPhone app for a different reason. It was rejected based on the SDK clause specifically prohibiting interpreted or executable code.

Unfortunately Apple this night pulled the C64 App from the App Store. We had agreed with Apple to remove basic from the application, but as we believed it would be possible to convince Apple to let it in later on, we left it in the app to be activated remotely by us when we had “go” from Apple .
Due to the extreme publicity the app has received over the weekend and the fact that several users found a way to enable the basic back, Apple decided (more…)
