To reproduce the bug, make sure to have a passcode lock turned on and lock your device. In the lockscreen, tap on Emergency Call in the lower left corner. Now type a non-existent emergency number, I tried #946494. Start the call, and as soon as the red button appear hit the sleep button. You’ll be brought to the contact list.

iPhone user by the name of Matt Janssen had even published a YouTube video of the bug.
had reported that the issue should be fixed in iPhone OS 3.1 as he had tried to replicate the bug on an iPhone running the beta version of iPhone OS 3.1 with both POP3 and IMAP accounts and was not able to reproduce the bug. He had also published a video to show that the deleted emails are no longer displayed in Spotlight in iPhone OS 3.1:

Landau was not the only one who had observed this issue. One user by the name of Matt Janssen even published a YouTube video of the bug.
As you can see from the YouTube video below, tapping on the deleted email launches the Mail app but crashes immediately, which is slightly different from Landau's observation.
