According to Apple 's internal documentation, the iPhone is now available without AT&T contract or ID at any Apple Store. Our contact claims that the iPhone is locked, however, so it will only work with AT&T SIMs. Here are the conditions:
• Customers are not required to have an AT&T contract.

According to a post on TamsIJungle, Berthold Thoma, the CEO of Hutchison Austria (which is also known by the name 3 in certain countries) had this to say:

Last week we had written about leaked tech specifications of Nexus One. We had also mentioned that the date of launch could be on January 5.
