has just reported that Apple will be holding an event in the first week of March to release the highly anticipated next generation iPad.
Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2, and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple ’s preferred location for big announcements like these.
Paczkowski doesn’t know the date of the special event, but expects iPad 3 to be available a week or so after the event.
According to his source, iPad 3 will have a similar form factor as iPad 2, come with a much faster chip, an improved graphics processing unit (GPU), and featuring a 2048×1536 Retina Display, which is in-line with the rumors we’ve heard recently.
has been quite a reliable source when it comes to Apple related information.
It remains to be seen if 2012 will be the year of iPad 3.

while submitting them to the App Store.
Prior to this, developers could upload images for Retina Display, but it was not a mandatory requirement.
When you create or update your apps in iTunes Connect, you must upload screenshots that are high-resolution. We require your screenshots as high-resolution images so that your app is optimized for the Retina display.
The requirements for high-resolution images are 960 x 640, 960 x 600, 640 x 960, or 640 x 920 pixels. Images must be at least 72 dpi, in the RGB color space, and the file must be .jpeg, .jpg, .tif, .tiff, or .png. You can update your screenshot files at any time in iTunes Connect.
Developers need to meet this new requirement even when they submit an update for their existing apps. While this could well be a house-keeping exercise to ensure that the images in the App Store look good on iOS devices like iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S with Retina display, it has also led to
may not be around much longer.
We don’t agree. While we expect Apple to phase out iPhone 3GS when it launches the
, we don’t think Apple will stop supporting iPhone 3GS so soon. Also screenshots are used in the App Store and has no bearing on the support for a particular device.
What do you think?

that it plans to add support for Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian, and Spanish to Siri in 2012.
, Apple is planning to add support for Chinese to Siri next month. According to their sources, it is already undergoing internal testing this month.
In addition to understanding and speaking in Chinese, Apple will also add Maps and local search support for Siri in China, which should come as good news to users. Currently, Maps and local search support is available only to users in the U.S.
The rumor also contends that the Chinese version will only support the standard Mandarin (aka: putonghua) Chinese, which would leave out Cantonese-speaking people, as well as some Taiwan folk who effectively speak in a different dialect.
The report also claims that Apple will also add support for Japanese and Russian languages to Siri next month. Please note that DoNews does not have a track record when it comes to Apple related rumors so take this with a pinch of salt.

Apple and Samsung together hoovered up more than 95 percent of mobile phone profits last quarter, leaving little left for other players, says Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley.

Actually, there wasn’t a whole lot left for Samsung, either, once Apple was done with things.

With strong demand for the iPhone 4S, Apple alone took home around 80 percent of all mobile phone profits in the fourth quarter, up from just 56 percent in the third quarter, according to the analyst. Yet the company holds just 8.1 percent of the global mobile phone market.

At the same time, Samsung’s share of industry profits shrank to 15 percent from 26 percent, but its share of Android customers jumped to 39 percent from 35 percent.

For the quarter, Apple sold 37 million iPhones, helping it ring up overall earnings of $13 billion. Samsung didn’t reveal how many smartphones it sold, but one analyst pegged the number as high as 35 million.

Apple and Samsung spent the better part of 2011 battling each other for the top crown. C… [Read more]

Apple has finally scored a win in its never-ending patent battles with Motorola Mobility.

A German judge today found that the iPhone maker did not infringe on a Motorola patent related to wireless technology, according to Florian Mueller’s Foss Patents legal blog.

The patent in question covers 3G/UMTS wireless communications and in tech jargon refers to a “method and system for generating a complex pseudonoise sequence for processing a code division multiple access [CDMA] signal.”

Motorola had argued that any use of 3G/UMTS by Apple would violate the patent. But Judge Andreas Voss was unconvinced, finding that Motorola failed to provide evidence that any Apple products had adopted the specific invention either through hardware or software code.

“Since the asserted patent claim is centered around the ‘means’ used to generate a number that optimizes wireless transmissions, the court would have wanted to see proof that Apple ‘s products contain such ‘means,’” explained Mueller. “[Motorola Mobility] didn’t show any kind of actual implementation (neither hardware nor software), and arguing merely on the basis of the specifications of the standard was insufficient to win.”

An Apple employee said that the version of the new iPad that is being tested inside the company is “essentially the same size and shape as the iPad 2,” with an improved and “truly amazing” screen. The tablet will include a faster processor, said the employee, who did not want to be identified because Apple is not fond of leaks.
This is in-line with rumors and leaked iPad 3 parts, which have indicated that Apple ‘s highly anticipated
will come with Retina Display, but look similar to iPad 2.
has published a photo of a Sharp LCD screen, which they claim will be used for iPad 3.
We can’t wait to get our hands on an iPad 3 with Retina Display. What about you?

Apple has been crowned the victor in last quarter’s smartphone wars by yet another research firm.

Among the top five global manufacturers, Apple grabbed the top spot with a market share of 23.5 percent, according to IDC. That proved a healthy gain over the 15.9 percent share from a year ago.

The iPhone maker also shipped the greatest number of phones last quarter at 37 million, compared with just 16.2 million in 2010′s fourth quarter.

Brisk sales for the iPhone 4S helped Apple narrowly surpass its smartphone rival Samsung. The Korean handset maker’s share rose to 22.8 percent, a leap from 9.4 percent last year. Samsung shipped 36 million phones for the quarter, just a percentage point behind Apple .

The new iPhone helped Apple achieve a record number of shipments, both for itself and across the entire industry, according to IDC.

The heavy demand came despite some initial disappointment that the iPhone 4S would not be the rumored iPhone 5 with a larger screen size and other whiz-bang fatures. But the combination of holiday shopping, a delay in the iPhone ‘s launch to the fourth quarter, and the addition of Sprint as a carrier all added up to higher volumes.

Samsung may have come in second for the quarter but its 275 percent growth in shipments was tops among all five vendors. The company kept expanding its Galaxy-class lineup, focusing on both high-end handsets such as the G… [Read more]

According to a report from AppleInsider, oil field services provider Halliburton has decided to drop Research In Motion’s BlackBerry platform in favor of Apple ‘s iOS for its workforce.

An internal newsletter outlined the plan for the nearly 70,000 employees who work for Halliburton in more than 70 countries. “Over the next year, we will begin expanding the use of our mobile technology by transitioning from the BlackBerry (RIM) platform that we currently use to smartphone technology via the iPhone .”

After what is dubbed as significant research, Halliburton determined that Apple ‘s iOS offers greater security, capabilities, and control when considering future app development for the company.
