backup.
It would be quite bizarre if this turns out to be true, as hackers have been working hard to bring
but still only for someone who is technically inclined.
“AppleGordon” recently purchased a brand new white iPod touch and claims that instead of setting it up as a new device, he attempted to restore it from a backup of his iPhone 4S in iTunes. Once the process was complete, Gordon claims that Siri had been installed on his iPod .
The feature does not work because it cannot connect to Apple ’s servers, and Gordon reports that it’s very buggy, causing the iPod to crash several times during the day. But the entire Siri interface is there, and Gordon claims that the Dictation feature works flawlessly.
It’s not just his iPod touch that has Siri either. Gordon says that he also attempted the same thing with his Verizon iPhone 4 and managed to install Siri successfully on that, too.
While the video and the screenshots prove that Siri is installed on Gordon’s device, we’re skeptical that it was installed simply using an iPhone 4S backup. Gordon’s device is jailbroken, and although he takes us through the Settings menu to show that third-party Siri tweaks or hacks have not been installed, we still feel that there’s a little more to this than Gordon reports.
What do you think? Real, fake or really fake?

Apple has pulled the plug on iPhone 4S sales in mainland China after unruly crowds hurled eggs at the company’s flagship store in Beijing.

Hundreds of people had waited in line overnight to grab the new phone at the Santilun outlet (English translation) in Beijing, only to find out in the morning that Apple had decided not to open the store in light of safety issues over the huge throngs of people, according to the Associated Press.

In reaction, some in the crowd began hurtling eggs at the store, eventually triggering the arrival of police who were forced to drag several people away. As a result of the melee, Apple made the decision to halt sales of the phone across its five retail stores in China.

“Unfortunately we were unable to open our store at Sanlitun due to the large crowd and to ensure the safety of our customers and employees, the iPhone will not … [Read more]

reported that some users were facing Wi-Fi connectivity issues after upgrading to iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1.

Based on this
, it seems to be affecting iPhone 4
, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3GS, the iPads and even iPod touch users.
This is not the first time iOS device users are facing Wi-Fi connectivity issues after upgrading to the latest iOS 5/iOS 5.0.1 software update. Users have reported similar issues with Wi-Fi connectivity after upgrading to iOS 3.x and iOS 4.x software update as well.
If you’re facing any of these issues, you can follow these tips to see if one of them resolves the issue until Apple releases an iOS software update to fix the issue:
If this doesn’t work then try to renew IP address, which may be required if you are using a larger wireless network.
If renewing IP address doesn’t resolve the issue, try establishing a fresh connection with the Wi-Fi network by using the
option. Please note that this will clear your current Wi-Fi network settings, including saved Wi-Fi passwords.
If this doesn’t help try restarting your iOS device.
If restarting your iOS device doesn’t resolve the problem then reset all network settings. Please note that this will clear your current cellular and Wi-Fi network settings, including saved networks, Wi-Fi passwords, and VPN settings.
Please let us know if you’re facing any Wi-Fi connectivity issue after upgrading to iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 and if any of the tips mentioned above helped in resolving the issue.

, can now be used for games as well. The first app to use the In-App Subscription API is Big Fish Games’ “Play Instantly!” for the iPad, which is sort of like Netflix for games. For a monthly subscription fee, users can play any game in Big Fish’s catalogue.
The subscription will initially cost $4.99 and increase to $6.99 early next year. Without subscriptions users would be limited to a playing time of 30 minutes per day.
Their catalogue includes games like Mahjong Towers, Mystery Case Files and many others, with the company promising addition of new games every week.
The app itself is nothing short of innovative, at least according to
With Big Fish’s Play Instantly!, anyone with a Wi-Fi internet connection can launch and begin playing any game in the catalog within seconds. The service is free for a limited time each day, or available as an unlimited, full-screen experience with access to all of the games in the service via a monthly subscription. As these games run in the cloud, Play Instantly! users can play games immediately with no additional download or installation process. Each player’s progress for each game is saved in the cloud, allowing them to pick up where they left off regardless of the device they are using. Players can jump into any game, exit out and later pick up where they left off on the same device they started on, or on any other supported device.
According to the founder of Big Fish, Paul Thelen, it took them a while to convince Apple to expand their In-App Subscriptions policy to games:
“It took longer than usual to be approved. They needed to be convinced there’s a reason to charge customers every month.”
, PCs,
and Android devices.
The “Play Instantly!” app, although available on the U.S. App Store (
, isn’t open to all. A section of the app’s description reads:
The exclusive first look of Play Instantly! is available to a limited number of customers. Due to a high level of interest we are currently full, but sign-up within the app and we will notify you via email as soon as we have room.
incorporate subscriptions into their app. What do you expect?

According to a keen eye from MacRumors, the iPhone 4S, in just over a month after its release, has become the second most popular camera phone on Flickr, trailing only the iPhone 4.

Flickr provides data on the most popular cameras used to post photos on its popular image-sharing site. The data is collected by automatically detecting the camera type using the image file’s metadata, which Flickr claims it can accomplish on about two-thirds of image uploads.

These graphs are also constantly changing, which makes the page an interesting gauge at current camera usage and popularity as it relates to Flickr members. The iPhone 4S, in just over a month has managed to surpass all other camera phones (which Flickr admits are under represented because of the lack of metadata in many camera phone devices) save for the iPhone 4, including the iPhone 3, iPhone 3GS, and HTC EVO 4G.

The iPhone 4, coincidentally, is actually the most popular camera on Flickr overall, beating out traditional camera powerhouses like Nikon (D90) and Canon (EOS 5D Mark II, EOS REBEL T2i, EOS 7D).

(Credit:

, and if that wasn’t bad enough, users have started reported new problems after upgrading to the latest iOS software update.
via the over-the-air (OTA) update has screwed up the address book on his iPhone .
I updated my iPhone 4S earlier today (using the OTA method), and I discovered a nasty bug. My iPhone could no longer remember the names of any of my contacts! I opened up the contacts app on my phone and discovered that all of entries were still there but if I got a text or a call my iPhone would have a sudden bout of amnesia and forget the contacts name.
It’s even more bizarre when you’re trying to create a new text. In the example above I texted Erin Hontz. After I selected her as the contact, I wrote my message and hit send. In the message pane (pictured on the right) it would forget my contact’s name and just show the number.
Hontz is not the only one to face this issue.
– one of our readers has just commented about an issue with iPhone contacts after upgrading to iOS 5.0.1:
Battery levels stayed the same. Where the update screwed me was my contacts. If I don’t have the “+ 1″ format entered, the name of the contact doesn’t show up. Planning on restoring to factory settings.
According to Hontz, the issue seems to be affecting only iPhone 4S users. Hontz has provided the following workaround to fix the issue:
1) Open the Phone and dial *228. This is a Verizon over-the-air programming number.
3) Wait for the call to disconnect. You should get a prompt stating something like, “Settings updated.”
4) Open the Task Manager (double click the home button) and kill the Phone, Message, and Contacts Applications
6) Open the Message App to verify the fix.
If you are still broken, kill the Message App again, then reboot your phone.
Did iOS 5.0.1 also mess up your iPhone Contacts? Let us know if the workaround helped.

Late last night, BigBoss released a new package on Cydia called
, which allows you to reboot your jailbroken iOS 5 device without the need to connect it to the computer.
However, BigBoss’s solution had some limitations and number of users reported issues after using it. BigBoss has released a new version of SemiTether to fix some of the issues.
I updated to 0.7.9. This version will take about 90 seconds after it first boots up and then your device will respring again. This timing was the only way to get some of the launch daemons to properly relaunch.
BigBoss has mentioned that SemiTether 0.7.9 should fix issues for some of you where:
1) Device does not sync with itunes and only errors. Hopefully solved.
2) Device reboots after 2-3 minutes.
Note, Saurik is working on an update to mobile substrate that will solve many of the issues with the semi-tether package. Hopefully this will be out in a day or two. At this time, we can finalize beta testing. I plan to hold further updates until after Saurik has released his mobile substrate update. Saurik’s updates will eliminate the need for the long 90 second respring on boot also.
This update was only tested on iphone 4. After saurik’s mobile substrate changes, more devices will be tested. Next updates coming in next 2-3 days.
Semi tethered mode will allow users, especially iPhone users who want to jailbreak their iPhone to at least use it for some of the basic functionalities of the iPhone , instead of the tethered mode where if you reboot the iPhone for any reason it is stuck at the Apple logo, until you don’t tether it to the computer and use Redsn0w’s Just Boot option. Here’s a summary of what you can and cannot do in semi tethered mode.
1) Can use phone, sms (text messages)
2) Can use every other stock app on iphone .
5) Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.
6) You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.
7) While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to “boot tethered”.
Please also note that your jailbroken iOS 5 device in semi tethered mode will take 90 seconds to reboot.
SemiTether is currently available as beta so please proceed with caution or wait until Jay Freeman a.k.a saurik releases a new version of Mobile Substrate that will fix most of the issues and make it a lot more stable.
.
Please don’t forget to let us know how it goes in the comments.

Apple ‘s fourth quarter disappointed Wall Street, but J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz believes iPhone sales were hurt simply by customers waiting to pick up the newest version.

For the quarter, Apple took home sales of $28.27 billion and earnings of $6.62 billion, or $7.02 per share. Those figures were up from sales of $20.34 billion and earnings per share of $4.64 a year ago. But the earnings came in 27 cents lower than the average estimate by analysts surveyed by Thompson Financial.

Apple ‘s failure to meet earnings estimates was the first time that has happened since September 2004.

In a hangover effect this morning, Apple ‘s shares have been down about 5 percent in the first hour of trading on the Nasdaq, to around $400 even.

iPhone sales in particular missed the mark for the quarter just ended. Apple sold 17.1 million units of its flagship phone. That figure showed a 21 percent jump over the year-ago quarter but failed to reach J.P. Morgan’s forecast of 20.6 million or the Wall Street consensus of around 19 million.

between Apple and Samsung doesn’t seem to be adversely affecting the business relationship the two companies share. According to a
report, Samsung will continue supplying Apple with the processors used on
devices.
Contrary to earlier reports that said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) would be manufacturing Apple ‘s next generation A6 chips,
“Apple has been in talks with Samsung over shipment of its A6 quad-core mobile processor (AP) chips to be used in the next iPhone . It appears that Apple clearly has concluded that Samsung remains a critical business partner,” an executive from an Apple parts supplier based in Korea said on condition of anonymity.
? According to the report:
TSMC will provide customized chips with designs from Apple , however, the volume will be very small
[...]
The manufacturing process at TSMC hasn’t been stabilized. Considering Apple ’s previous patterns of adopting qualified technologies, Apple isn’t taking risks. Samsung offers better pricing and capacity commitment for the A6 mobile APs
So it looks like Apple is keen on working with TSMC to sideline Samsung as the primary chip supplier for iOS devices, but for some reason TSMC isn’t able to deliver.
The news flow in the past few days is a perfect indicator of how awkward the relationship between Apple and Samsung presently is. While
reported that Samsung’s president and COO (same person) was invited to Steve Jobs’ memorial,
.
“Apple is one of Samsung’s most important clients, and we have developed a solid partnership. But that’s a separate matter from the legal disputes between the two companies in areas where they compete”
Over time, it appears that
would decrease its reliance on Samsung for essential device components, just like
for essential iOS software.

Earlier this week, we
would keep the GSM micro-SIM card slot unlocked, whereas Verizon will unlock the micro-SIM card slot by request after 60 days.
has received an update from Sprint explaining that this was not exactly the case, and that the micro-SIM card slot in Sprint iPhone 4S would be locked.
According to Macworld, the micro-SIM card slot of the Sprint iPhone 4S will be unlocked at launch and a carrier update would be pushed out that will lock this capability of the device.
Sprint’s policy is to have the iPhone 4S SIM locked to our network domestically and internationally. At launch, the International SIM will be unlocked. We do expect a SIM lock to be pushed to the devices shortly after launch.
However, if you are a customer in good-standing, then you can contact Sprint and they will unlock the micro-SIM card slot again.
Sprint is likely trying to put focus on its own international roaming plans. Sprint charges flat rates for voice, SMS, and data while abroad. However, subscribers of their International Plans – $2.99/month for Canada, $4.99/month Worldwide – get discounted rates. For example, Sprint’s regular voice rate for roaming in Canada is 59 cents a minute, regardless of where the calls are going to. With the Canada roaming add-on, that rate falls to 20 cents/minute.
However, customers without outstanding balances should be able to have their phones unlocked. This means they can pop in a SIM from a local carrier while travelling internationally and pay the local rates, which are usually drastically cheaper. The move kind of puts the company in line with Verizon, which will unlock phones after a 60-day wait period for customers.
A lot of unanswered questions remain, however. It is also not clear if domestic SIM cards can be used if the micro-SIM card slot is unlocked or it is only applicable for international roaming. We’re assuming it is the later. There’s also no information as to why Sprint will originally go ahead and sell the iPhone 4S unlocked and then lock them with an update, only to unlock them at customers’ requests. It will be interesting to see if Sprint customers can ignore the update so that they can keep their micro-SIM card unlocked.
