The iPhone 4S is here. Finally.

Apple released its first new iPhone in nearly a year and a half at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters today. , Samsung has announced on its website that plans to get the iPhone 4S banned in France and Italy, for which it would file motions in courts of both countries. The motions filed are based on alleged infringement of two of Samsung’s patents related to Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) standards for 3G mobile handsets.

Apple has unveiled the next iPhone at long last, and with it comes iOS 5, which we first learned of in June. We got demos of 10 of the 200 additions and enhancements, including the hotly anticipated over-the-air system updates, new message notifications, and group messaging. The iOS 5 update rolls out on October 12.

The purported 8GB iPhone 4 is marked with codename N90A, whereas the internal codename of the current generation iPhone 4 is N90, which suggests that the 8GB iPhone 4 will come with only minor modifications.

Apple is shelling out around $200 to make each 32GB iPhone 4S, which the company will ultimately sell for $749 not counting the carrier subsidy.

At least that’s the initial estimate from research firm UBM TechInsights.
