Google has just released a native app for Photovine – their new photo sharing service.
We had heard rumors of the new service for the last few weeks and Google has surprised everyone by releasing the app for iOS, strangely even before it has released an Android app.
Photovine is a fun way to learn more about your friends, meet new people, and share your world like never before. It all starts with what we call a photovine: a group of photos around a single, shared caption. Start a new vine with a photo and caption of your own or add your photo/take on someone else’s vine.
plant a photo, watch it grow
‘, encourages users to share photos centering around user-created topics called “vines”.
Unfortunately, Photovine is invite-only at the moment, so you need to be a registered user to use the app or request for the invite on
.
Google has not announced the launch of Photovine on any of its official blogs, which is also quite strange and there is no mention of Google on the Photovine website. Photovine’s Facebook page reads:
“Photovine is a community that’s about creating fun and unique collections of photos that we call Vines,”
. It is compatible with iPhone ,
or later.
It will be interesting to see if Google will integrate Photovine with its Google+ – its latest social networking project. Incidentally,
yesterday is already the number 1 free app in the App Store.
Photovine is developed by Slide, which Google had acquired in August 2010, but it looks like it is still operating as a separate entity, which explains the reason why the iPhone app was released before the Android app and lack of any formal announcement by Google.
