We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction. It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera.
As you can see from the videos above, they’ve used the front facing camera to track the exact location of the user’s head and render view dependent images on the screen to create a realistic illusion of depth and space, which is very impressive.
We hope that Apple brings 3D tech to the next generation iOS devices.
