With 2011 fast approaching, a number of
has started to trickle in.
Japanese blog Macotakara claims that according to their Chinese source, iPad 2 will sport a smaller bezel compared to the current version of the iPad. It would also get a flat back and a new wide range speaker unit.
While Apple products have traditionally boasted of eye catching, pleasing designs, when the iPad was first seen, it was criticized by many for the size of the outer plastic bezel – which many thought was too large. There were also arguments that the “wasted” bezel space could have been utilized for a larger screen. While a larger screen would have to wait, Macotakara claims that the next generation iPad will get a bezel that would be narrower by 3×3 mm.
Owing to this, the overall dimensions of the iPad would reduce to 239 mm x 186 mm compared to the current generation iPad’s size of 242.8 mm x 189.7 mm. Another major update would be the back of the iPad 2 which would sport a flat design unlike the rounded back on current iPad. This design change will allow the iPad to be placed on tables and flat surfaces with ease. There are also rumors about
. The front one would be used for Facetime video calls while the rear one can be useful for casual imaging. The rear unit is rumored to be the same as the one used in iPhone 4.
“wide-ranged speaker unit covered with metal mesh”,
which I’m assuming will improve sound quality. The blog also adds that the shipping date for the new iPad
“seems to be sometime between mid to end of January.”
While Macotakara has no history of leaking scoops like this, it remains to be seen if they do end up being right.
I think a smaller bezel and wide-range speaker unit would be welcome improvements from the current generation iPad.
What do you think?
