Verizon Working On Android-Powered iPad Killer

While it is evident that the new tablet shall run on Android OS, it is not clear if Google is involved in the new product launch. Speaking to the
, a Google spokesperson declined to comment on the news adding that anyone was welcome to use the company's open source mobile OS software for their smartphone and tablet devices. The newspaper has also noted that McAdam did not elaborate on the manufacturer or the launch date for the new tablet.
Nevertheless, Verizon's announcement has opened up a new avenue for competition between the company and AT&T. Rivalry between the two
during the holiday shopping season last year where it relentlessly attacked Ma Bell's network reliability. News of an Android-powered Verizon tablet is also significant from Apple 's point of view. The relationship between Apple and Google have
since Mountain View's announcement of a foray into the mobile OS space. Google also launched

The tablet segment is still in its nascent stage of growth. However, interest in the segment has increased multi-fold since Apple successfully

within the first few weeks of launch, Apple already has a head-start over its competitors. According to IDC analyst Al Hilwa, it will take competition a lot of time to match Apple 's success in the segment. He says:
“Everyone is going to have a device that is going to compete with the iPad. Apple created that market, legitimized it. Everybody has seen that this is going to be huge…Obviously, the carriers want to get in on this gig. It’s going to be very competitive…It’s probably going to take a year to two years for them to get to the same functionality as the iPad.”
It is amazing how companies realize that there're opportunities in a segment after Apple has launched a product.
